Brexit for Britons in the Netherlands

Now that the EU Parliament has approved the Brexit agreement, a ‘soft’ Brexit is a step closer. However, the British Parliament still has to approve the deal and it is uncertain if this will be the case.  Hereunder you will find a number of scenarios that may be applicable for Britons in the Netherlands. Please visit the Brexit pages of the Dutch immigration authorities IND site for extra information. The Brexit newsletter from the IND may also be of interest.

You hold the UK nationality

If the deal will be approved by the British Parliament you will have the same rights as now. You can continue to live and work in the Netherlands. You will be invited by the IND between 29 March 2019 and 31 December 2020 to make an application for your new residence status.

If the deal is rejected you will receive a message from the Dutch government informing you about the steps to take. These steps are not known yet.

You are the non EU partner of a Briton

Same here, if the deal will be approved by the British Parliament nothing will change in your situation. You will still have the right to reside and work in the Netherlands. If there is no deal you will be informed by the Dutch government what to do.

You hold the UK nationality and have lived in the Netherlands for more than 5 years

After 5 years of legal residence in the Netherlands you can obtain a permanent right of residence. We advise you to apply for this in the coming months so that this can be arranged before March 29, 2019. With a deal this procedure will remain possible. Should the deal not be approved by the British Parliament then you will receive further messages from the Dutch government.

The initiative for action comes from the IND

Supposing that you are registered in the Netherlands and your registered address is correct, you don’t have to take action yourself. The IND will contact you if action is needed. Please make sure that your registration at the local government is done and on the right address so that the IND will be able to reach you.
